Just a heads up, i do not want answers that say "i dont know" "thanks for the 2 points" OR "ask a doctor". I will ask one later, but this was a random question that poped into my head, and thought i'd ask on here, just to see if anyone knows the answer. just a warning, i will report anyone who doesnt give a real answer.
My question is… Does anybody know if there is any type of [legal] drug out there, that can be taken only minutes before a panic attack, and prevent it? I dont like taking medication daily, so really, I'm just curious if there is anything out there, that can be taken "as needed", yet still be effective in a short amount of time. like… i feel one coming on, i pop a pill down, and then im good to go… lol.
Basically, similiar to how people with asthma, have an inhaler. is there anything related to that for panic attacks?
Thanks in advance for all ur help.
there is no panic attack "inhaler"…
any anxiolytic tablets one might take would need at least 15-30 minutes to go into effect…

There is a lot of medication you can take. It won't help prevent it; it will lessen the episode. I have found that doing breathing exercises for panic and anxiety has helped more than any medication. There are books/CD's that can help you with this. Look for books/Cd's by a Dr. Amen. I also encourage you to go to a therapist to learn why you are prone to these attacks. It helped me tremendously. I still get every once in a while, but they are under control. Good luck!

I get panic attacks often and I'm not sure what causes it, but usually if I step outside into fresh air, or go to a cool room and take deep breaths and sit it goes away. I hope this helps!

sudafed. Not the "over the counter stuff" they sell in front of the pharmacy cabinet but the old forumla w/ pseudophedrine in it. B/c some people make it into drugs they will limit how much you can buy at once but one or two of those when you are having a melt down stops a manic attack in its tracks.

Well, I dunno about the instant pill, but i know deep breathing works for me. I also dont like taking pill sall the time, so I took a meditation & relaxation class & worked on my deep breathing.. It also helps to concentrate on something else besides the attack.
What I do is when I feel it coming on I close my eyes, place a hand over my heart (it helps me to be aware of the speed of the beat), then a start my deep breathing process. While breathing deep i take note of the slowing speed of my heart & continue until calm. It may be quite difficult the first few times you try it, but once you get the hang of it you wont have to be dependent on meds again! My attacks eventually went away bc I could slow my heart rate sooner each time an attack would pop up..
I hope this help you!
